Brian Rayner is an Emeritus Professor and Senior Scholar at the University of Cape Town (UCT). He obtained his degree from UCT in 1978, completed his Fellowship of the College of Physicians in 1986. He also obtained his MMed and PhD degrees from UCT. His doctoral thesis focused on salt sensitivity and salt sensitive hypertension in indigenous South African people. He received the World Hypertension League Award for Notable Achievement in Hypertension in 2014 for his research related to his doctorate.
He is the former Head of the Division of Nephrology and Hypertension based at the Groote Schuur Hospital and UCT, which is endorsed by the International Society of Nephrology as a Regional Training Centre of Excellence.
In 2016, Prof Rayner established the Kidney and Hypertension Research Unit in the division. The unit is an active training and research centre training nephrologists from sub-Saharan Africa and has active Masters and Doctoral programmes.
He is also a past President of the Southern African Hypertension Society and currently serves as an executive member of the African Regional Advisory Group of the International Society of Hypertension.
Prof Rayner's active research interests are therapy of hypertension, mutations in the epithelial sodium channel, genetic determinants of salt sensitivity and chronic disease, lupus nephritis, primary aldosteronism, assessing adherence in hypertensive patients, physiological treatment of resistant hypertension and genetics of severe hypertension in people of African descent.
He co-authored the 2014 South African Hypertension Practice Guideline and contributed to several guideline committees, including the WHO Pharmacological Treatment of Hypertension, and the Society for Endocrinology, Metabolism, and Diabetes of South Africa.He currently services on the Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease committee.
He has published a 177 articles in peer reviewed journals, has made over 120 presentations at local and international congresses and has written six chapters in books.
He was or currently is a principal investigator or national principal investigator in the Altitude, Coral, Award 7, Accelerate, Duration 8, Reprise, Carmelina, Tecos, Signify, Fidelio, Figaro, Delight, Protect2, ASCEND-ND, Flow, Regency, Zeus, Remodel, Zenith, Redefine and Zeus and other major international research studies.
