Although patients often talk about indigestion and heartburn as a single problem, they are in fact separate conditions. Or more specifically, indigestion is a condition, while heartburn is a symptom.
Indigestion (dyspepsia) is a functional condition in which the gastrointestinal organs, primarily the stomach and first part of the small intestine (and occasionally the esophagus), function abnormally. Heartburn is a symptom caused by reflux of acidic stomach contents into the oesophagus, resulting in irritation and burning. (more…)
