The global theme of the IASP for 2022 is “Translating Pain Knowledge to Practice”: how our accumulating pain knowledge may be used for the benefit of those living with pain. At the heart of this theme is a collaborative approach between the many different pain practitioners and scientists to truly see pain knowledge translated into life-changing breakthroughs for patients. This collaborative and multidisciplinary approach is critically important for improving pain outcomes, as the field of pain and pain management is inherently multidisciplinary. Building on this international foundation, the local theme for the 2022 PainSA Congress is Working Together for Pain Relief.
The 2022 PainSA Congress will bring together high-profile speakers to discuss the latest developments, research, and clinical trials from around the world. This event offers an opportunity to learn new skills, network with other professionals, and gain valuable insights into the future of pain management. The Congress will host prolific South African speakers who are experts in their fields and champions of pain relief. The Congress will also feature several prominent and high-profile international speakers to headline the plenary sessions, including world experts from Canada, the USA, and Germany.
The 2022 PainSA Congress will take place from 13 to 15 May 2022 at the vibrant Century City in Cape Town. The congress will bring together the best minds in the pain field and will discuss the latest research and developments, and offer ideas on state-of-the-art techniques to manage pain. The Congress will launch with 4 interactive workshops on Friday morning, 13 May, covering several critical aspects of pain. The workshop titles are:
- Cadaver workshop for chronic pain interventions
- Regional anaesthesia for acute pain interventions
- Unfogging fibromyalgia for the mental health sciences
- Get up and go! for the rehabilitation sciences
- How to function as a multidisciplinary team
- Educating and communicating pain
The Congress will continue on Friday afternoon with the opening plenary speakers. This exciting session will build on the multidisciplinary approach to pain by highlighting what the various disciplines involved in pain want other colleagues to know about their field, and what they can contribute to pain.
Saturday, 14 May will see the unfolding of the overarching themes for the rest of the Congress: Understanding pain, Managing pain, and Changing pain. Understanding pain will focus on pre-clinical and mechanistic research of how we can understand and characterise pain better; Managing pain will involve multidisciplinary aspects of the newest and most exciting developments in managing pain optimally; Changing pain will highlight new and exciting state-of-the-art exploratory and treatment modalities for pain, with a focus on future directions.
The 2022 PainSA Congress promises to be a highlight in the conference calendar, and through its multidisciplinary theme aims to truly inspire Working Together for Pain Relief.
