Annual estimated measles deaths declined from 546,800 to 114,900 from 2000-2014 (Lee et al., 2013).  In 2014, the last case of the poliovirus was noted in the African region (Global Polio Eradication Initiative, 2013). Vaccines protect not only individuals, but entire communities. If a critical number of people within a community are vaccinated against a particular illness, the entire group become less likely to get the disease.
