Nail fungal infections are the most common diseases of the nails, making up almost half of all nail abnormalities. Both fingernails and toenails are susceptible to infection, which usually appears as discolouration and thickening of the nail.

Since systemic antimycotic therapy for onychomycosis in most cases shows an increase in liver transaminases as a sign of liver cell damage, and since this therapy is also significantly more expensive, preference should be given to topical therapy using standardised applicator systems.
