Worldwide, about 300 million tons of plastic are produced annually. The environmental harm caused by plastic waste is increasingly being recognised. The healthcare sector is currently one of the largest producers of plastic and demand is projected to grow by 6.1% annually. Although there is currently no agreement on the time it takes plastic to degrade, it is estimated that its effects could last ‘hundreds of thousands of years’.   

The negative impact of some plastic on human health and the environment is increasingly being recognise. Medical advocacy groups have appealed to the healthcare sector to phase out harmful plastic products such as those made by PVC.
