Osteoporosis is characterised by low bone mass and deterioration of bone tissue, leading to bone fragility and an increase in the risk of fracture, according to the World Health Organization.  Bone mass is the primary determinant of bone strength. Studies of excised bone have demonstrated that about 80% of bone strength is determined by the amount of bone.2

Currently, most GIDs do not have specific guidelines for a diagnostic and management algorithm, and it is recommended that the guidelines for primary osteoporosis are followed.
