Osteoporosis is a skeletal disorder characterised by compromised bone strength predisposing to an increased risk of fracture. Bone strength reflects the integration of bone density and bone quality. There are no symptoms of low bone mass unless fracture occurs. Osteoporosis can also be defined by the presence or history of a fragility fracture.

Six months after fracture, 23% of patients report fair to poor recovery in functional outcome.
