It is widely accepted that AUB-O is caused by the deficiency of progesterone and the unopposed secretion of oestrogens, leading to a sustained endometrial proliferation without progesterone-withdrawal-induced shedding.

Luteal phase deficiency (LPD) is a condition of insufficient progesterone exposure to maintain a normal secretory endometrium and allow for normal embryo implantation and growth.
