The concept of patient confidentiality is entrenched in the medical field. It is recorded in the Hippocratic Oath and is reinforced in our health legislation (the Health Professions Act and regulations, the National Health Act) and in documents such as the Patient Rights Charter. The fundamental right to privacy is included in the Constitution and this underpins current and future legislation in protecting the patient.
