Insomnia is defined as having difficulty falling or staying asleep, or a sensation of unrefreshed sleep, and is of transient (2-3 days), short term (< 2-3 weeks) or chronic (> 3 weeks) nature. Although there are many causes of insomnia, depression is most commonly observed.

Insomnia is often a symptom of an underlying condition that causes the patient not to sleep for unacceptable time spans and durations.
