Calling it science by Twitter, Prof Vardas said the spreading of misinformation and rumours about the Covid-19 vaccines have led to mistrust in scientists, pharmaceutical companies, and government. As a result, people are hesitant to get vaccinated. Indeed, vaccination uptake in South Africa has been slow. In a survey of 500 000 private medical scheme members, only 30% indicated that they would be willing to take the Covid-19 vaccine. In a survey among frontline healthcare professionals, only 27% indicated that they would get vaccinated.
