DES is one of the most common reasons why patients – especially older patients – visit eye care professionals (25%). Females of all age groups are considered at greater risk of DES and prevalence increases with age. Furthermore, DES is associated with decreased quality of life and depression is high amongst these patients because some struggle to carry out even the most basic daily activities such as reading, watching television, using a computer, driving a vehicle, and working.

There is currently no cure for DES and treatment is symptomatic. The mainstay of conventional therapy consists of artificial tears that increase moisture on the ocular surface and provide lubrication.
