The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, fourth edition (DMS-IV) defines AjD as ‘emotional or behavioural symptoms occurring within three months in relation to an identified stressor, reactions of marked distress, and significant impairment in daily functioning’. The only difference included in the DSM-V is that AjD is now classified along with other stress-related disorders such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), complex PTSD and prolonged grief disorder.

AjD might only be diagnosed if symptoms occurred within three months in the context of identifiable stressor(s).
