Pain refers to any type of physical discomfort in any part of the body, which may be localised or more generalised. Pain may be acute, chronic, continuous, intermittent, occur at rest or with movement. Pain evolved to cause creatures to terminate damage and to rest to allow healing. It is essential for survival and maintaining the integrity of the organism. This is good pain. Bad pain occurs when the protective mechanism of pain gets out of control and leads to suffering – the emotional experience that accompanies pain.
